APA Opening August 2021

The Australian Photography Awards is one of the largest most celebrated photographic competitions in Australia. Since launching in 2016, we continue to seek and discover Australia’s most original and thought-provoking photography. We celebrate diversity and feel photography is a powerful medium for bringing people together and promoting understanding. Each year we reward emerging talent alongside some of Australia’s most established photographers.

We’re starting to get geared up for the 2023 APA Event program! Between October 20th to 22nd, we will be transforming Bodriggy Brewpub into a public arts precinct with beautiful print and mixed-media displays showcasing the finalists from this years award.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

With the help of our exhibition partners, @cansoninfinity and HC Pro, we are able to cover all printing, mounting and display costs associated with the APA 2023 Exhibition. We see these partnerships as a valuable way to provide greater opportunity and access for our community to exhibit their work publicly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We are excited to introduce Australian lens-based artist Serena Dzenis (@serenavsworld) as a member of the 2023 APA Committee. Serena's otherworldly photographs of the intersections between constructed and natural landscapes tell stories about science, conservation, environmental issues and the future of mankind. One such example is her series 2021 ± II: Utopia Broadcasting which you can view now on Photo Collective via the link in our bio.

From being an APA Finalist in 2022 to joining the committee for 2023, we are so pleased to welcome Serena to this side of the award process and can't wait to hear her thoughts about all the fantastic submissions we receive this year.

Last year we commissioned @ceciliasordicampos and

Last year we commissioned @ceciliasordicampos and @gussi.i to produce a short film for the 2022 APA Event. This collaboration resulted in corpo à luz, a beautiful portrait of Cecilia's autobiographical photographic practice. The tender storytelling, emboldened by Cecilia's vulnerability explores her migrant and female experiences alongside the act of making work that is both political and cathartic.

This film was produced using the fantastic Nikon Z System, kindly supported by our friends at @nikonaustralia. We also had amazing support from @kayellaustralia and @cansoninfinity in delivering a workshop at the 2022 APA Event delving deeper in to Cecilia's practice and creative workflows.

We're looking forward to October when we will be releasing another short documentary for the 2023 APA Event, more details on that soon. In the meantime, get your submissions together for APA 2023! We can't wait to see what you've been working on.

This Thursday (Feb 16), @oigall_projects will open

This Thursday (Feb 16), @oigall_projects will open their first exhibition for the year; The Chills curated by @annikakafcaloudis. Presenting work from 19 photographers both local and international Annika explores, through their lenses, the beauty of the unsettling, a binding cord that connects the cohort.
The Chills also coincides with the releasing of Book 01, a monograph by Annika Kafcaloudis chronicling the last three years of her practice, a collection of observations, processes and contemporary photography.

Opening night is February 16th from 6-8pm at 122 Gertrude St, Fitzroy, VIC. We hope to see you there!

There are some great exhibitions opening this week

There are some great exhibitions opening this weekend in Naarm/Melbourne! Starting with tonight's @ccp_australia launch of shows by Ying Ang, Miriam Charlie, Odette England and Lisa Sorgini. Each of these four exhibitions, bound together through themes of intimacy and recordings of home, represent great achievements by the artists. Commencing at 6pm tonight (27 Jan), with an artist talk taking place at 2pm tomorrow (28 Jan).

Tomorrow night (28 Jan) our friend Ayman Kaake (@aymankaake) opens his incredible exhibition '99 Names' at @brunswickstreetgallery. We have been looking forward seeing this work in print since Ayman discussed the project at the APA Event last year. We hope to see you there!

As the world encounters ecological, social and political uncertainty, PHOTO 2024 invites artist sand photographers to explore what lies ahead. What an incredible week it has been! To share so many conversations, stories, photographs and moments with our community has been the highlight of our year.

We have one final talk for this round of New Dialogues and it features us, the Photo Collective team, talking all things APA and the future of our organisation. This conversation will feature community feedback where we will discuss the standout photography we saw this year alongside some advice to help anybody taking part in photography awards put forward the strongest submissions possible.

This talk will be taking place in-person tomorrow night (Nov. 24) from 6pm onwards at @collarts Wellington campus. We will also be live-streaming to our Youtube and Facebook pages, so check in there to watch online, links are in bio.
